Brouwerij Het Anker is one of Mechelen’s best-known and most historic breweries. The brewery is located on the site of the Groot Begijnhof and builds on a brewing tradition that has been firmly rooted there for centuries. Today, Het Anker effortlessly combines that rich history with a modern approach to beer, without losing sight of its own character.
The brewery’s flagship is, of course, Gouden Carolus, a beer family that is now known far beyond Belgium’s borders. From powerful dark specialty beers to refined blondes and distinctly hoppy varieties, Het Anker shows just how many different directions Belgian brewing tradition can take. Beers such as Gouden Carolus Classic, Tripel and Hopsinjoor have meanwhile become established favourites, while special editions and barrel-aged creations continue to surprise more adventurous beer lovers.
Het Anker is about more than just beer, too. With Gouden Carolus Single Malt, the brewery also forged a link with whisky, placing the close connection between brewing and distilling at the heart of the project.
